Our public school system is supposed to be an engine of equity: students from all backgrounds should be able to receive an education that will help them succeed in life and maybe even do better than their parents did. Unfortunately, the statistics on student outcomes – including graduation and college admission rates – tell a different story. Many students from low-income and BIPOC families still attend schools where their prospects of success are uncertain.
Fortunately, many educators are rethinking assumptions to reveal entrenched biases and invent new teaching strategies. This video offers a glimpse at some of the solutions that award-winning educators have discovered to make their lessons more inclusive and their schools more equitable.
